Flip Turn Guide: Faster Walls With Cleaner Approach and Push-Off
A step-by-step guide to faster flip turns: approach speed, last stroke timing, rotation, foot placement, and push-off.
Approach: carry speed in
Most swimmers slow down into the wall. Keep stroke rate and hold water through the last 5 meters.
Count strokes from flags to wall so your turn is predictable.
Rotation and tuck: small and fast
A tight tuck rotates faster. Exhale gently through the nose to avoid water up the nostrils.
Aim to plant feet quickly rather than drifting into the wall.
Push-off: straight line, then kick
Push off in a clean streamline. If you push up or down, you waste force.
Kick begins after you lock the streamline—not before.
